Located in the village of Lousal, in the municipality of Grândola, the mine operated for almost a century, closing in 1988. It was subsequently revitalized and currently houses the Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal, an interactive center dedicated to scientific and technological dissemination, especially in areas such as geology, biology, chemistry, and physics.

Guided tours:
Waldemar Mining Gallery: This underground gallery, approximately 300 meters long, allows visitors to explore old mining facilities and learn about extraction techniques, local geology, and biological aspects of the subterranean environment.

Centro Ciência Viva: The Lousal Science Center invites visitors to travel back in time to the era when the Lousal mine was active, where minerals formed millions of years ago were mined by thousands of miners who cultivated their dreams, lived their loves, watched their children grow, and cared for their elders. Today, it is a land of the future again, a land reinvented by the will of many and sustained by the richest of minerals: Knowledge.

Relevance to Astrobiology:
Exploring extreme environments in the Waldemar Mining Gallery may offer parallels with subterranean conditions on other planets, providing valuable insights into life's adaptation to harsh conditions.

Accessibility from Lisbon:
Lousal is located approximately 120 km south of Lisbon, a bus journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Equipment:
Comfortable clothing and footwear, suitable for walking on uneven and wet terrain.
