Current status of ExoMars
The EXM-RFM Project is well progressing in the preparation of the flight and ground segments for a mission to Mars (Oxia Planum) with launch in 2028 and landing with start of surface operations in the second half on 2030.
The mission will be the first to Mars with a subsurface Drill and will carry a highly sophisticated payload with 8 scientific instruments, prepared by European and US space agencies and research institutes. Science expectation are very high, as confirmed at the last ESWT.
Following a successful system CDR in Q1/26, industrial activities are now focused on test campaigns to verify functionality/performance of the newly developed elements, to qualify structures and mechanisms design for the Aeroshell, Separation systems, Landing Platform and related equipment, as well as on the manufacturing and assembly of the Lander flight model, whilst continuing maintenance and refurbishment of existing flight hardware (Carrier and Rover, including its scientific payload).
In particular, the Spacecraft Structural Model has been assembled in early 2026 and underwent successfully sine and acoustic test in Q2/26, confirming compliance with the newly selected launcher requirements. Mechanisms separation test have been successfully executed after SM vibration. Landing Platform Dropt test and Egress test campaigns have been completed or are in progress.
The aeroshell elements flight unit (Back Shell and Front Shield) are built and being mated with the thermal protection system, while assembly of the Landing Platform flight model is in progress.
An overview of the current status of the project activities will be presented, highlighting achievemnets and challenges, with a look to schedule criticality and management of remaing risks.
The brief report will also adddress the main aspects of international cooperation with NASA, especially related to launcher interface, technical support cooperation and ground operations preparation at the launch site.
